Poland vs Portugal

The quarterfinal stage of Euro 2016 gets underway on Thursday night with Poland taking on Portugal at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille. Portugal are yet to win a match in 90 minutes at Euro 2016.

Poland became the first side to reach the last eight after beating Switzerland 5-4 in a penalty shootout, with the scores level at 1-1 after extra time. Kuba Blaszcyzkowski continued his superb Euros record, opening the scoring in the first half. Blaszczykowski has scored or assisted five of Poland’s six goals in the competition’s history.

Poland were pushed back in the second half and conceded late on when Xherdan Shaqiri’s spectacular overhead kick beat Lukasz Fabianski. The Swansea keeper was in a great form on the day and looks set to keep out Wojciech Szczesny, should the latter recover from a thigh injury.

Poland converted all five of their penalty kicks in the shootout, with Granit Xhaka’s miss for Switzerland proving costly.

Portugal creeped through to the quarterfinal with a narrow 1-0 win over Croatia. Portugal were outplayed for the majority of the 90 minutes but held on for their fourth consecutive normal-time draw. The match looked to be heading for a penalty shootout before substitute Ricardo Quaresma struck in the 117th minute.

Speaking after the match, Portugal headcoach Fernando Santos said: “Sometimes you have to be pragmatic. It’d be nice to play pretty but that’s not always how you win tournaments. Both teams went into this thinking this was a key step towards the final and luck was on our side – we earned it. Next up, Poland.”

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to add to his 2 goals and 2 assists while his Polish counterpart Robert Lewandowski is still to get off the mark in France. Teenage midfielder Bartosz Kapustka will be back in contention for Adam Nawalka’s side, having served a 1-match suspension in the previous round.

The match will be Poland’s second at the Stade Velodrome, following their 1-0 win over Ukraine in the group stage. The winner of the tie will face one of Wales or Belgium in the semi-finals in Lyon on July 6.

Possible XI

Poland: Fabianski, Piszczek, Glik, Pazdan, Jedrzejczyk, Blaszczykowski, Krychowiak, Maczynski, Grosicki, Milik, Lewandowski.

Portugal: Rui Patricio, Soares, Pepe, Fonte, Guerreiro, Joao Mario,, Adrien Silva, Carvalho, Renato Sanches, Nani, Ronaldo.

Catholic bishops contribution over nimbo fulani herdsmen attack

Onitsha Provincial Bishops rose from their meeting at Enugu the capital of Enugu State on Tuesday afternoon 10th May 2016 to visit Nimbo, Uzo Uwani LGA of Enugu State where suspected Fulani Herdsmen inflicted brutal crimes on Nimbo people; killing scores of people, maiming dozens of victims, torching down buildings and internally displacing the entire community on 25th April 2016.

The Provincial Bishops visited one of the sites, St Mary's Parish, Nimbo, where the inhuman acts were meted out on innocent souls at the early hours of that painful date. The leader of the college of bishops was His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. Valerian Maduka Okeke, the Archbishop and Metropolitan of Onitsha.

Other Bishops present were: Most Rev. Dr. Callistus Onaga of Enugu Diocese; Most Rev. Dr. Hilary Odili Okeke of Nnewi Diocese; Most Rev. Dr. John Ifeanyi Okoye of Awgu Diocese; Most Rev. Dr. Paulinus C. Ezeokafor of Awka; Most Rev. Dr. Dennis Isizu Auxiliary Bishop of Onitsha; Most Rev. Dr. Jonas Benson Okoye Auxiliary Bishop of Awka; and the host Bishop Most Rev. Dr. Godfrey Igwebuike Onah of Nsukka Diocese. Other Bishops who were in solidarity with the visit though they were not present were Most Rev. Dr. Michael Okoro of Abakiliki; Most Rev. Dr. Francis Okobo Emeritus Bishop of Nsukka and Most Rev. Dr. Anthony Okonkwo Gbuji the Emeritus Bishop of Enugu.

Present during the visit were Monsignor Evaristus Nwamadi of Enugu Diocese who was on his private visit when the bishops arrived; a handful of priests of Nsukka diocese including Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Amuluche Nnamani, Rev. Fr. Martins Ozioko, Rev. Fr. Dr. Brendan Nwodo, other Catholic priests and two Anglican priests.

The convoy of Bishops arrived Nimbo shortly before 4pm on 10th May 2016 after they rose from their meeting in Enugu. Before they got to Nimbo, a crowd of the Nimbo people who were already coming home after they had deserted their homes at the wake of the heinous crimes was at hand to welcome the bishops and their entourage. As soon as the bishops arrived the arena was electrified with joy.

The host Bishop Godfrey Onah quickly welcomed the Bishops and introduced the august visitors to the Nimbo people. He highlighted the fervent desires of the bishops to visit Nimbo people in spite of the stress of their earlier meeting in Enugu. "I told them that the road is very far, but they insisted they must visit. I told them that the roads are very bad, they maintained they must visit because the stories they hear of what happened in our place were heartbreaking and difficult to bear. They insisted they would visit to console us, and to tell us that they are joined to us in prayers".

Leading the opening prayer, at the request of the Metropolitan of Onitsha Most Rev. Dr. Valerian Okeke, the Bishop of Nnewi Diocese Most Rev. Dr. Hilary Okeke thanked God for saving some lives of the Nimbo people.

He prayed for the happy repose of the deceased, and prayed God to avert such untold suffering on the people. He prayed that their visit to the community would further express God's love to His people. Bishop Okeke prayed for security of lives and properties of all Nigerians and across the country. He prayed for peace and progress in Nigeria.

In his speech, the Metropolitan of Onitsha, His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Valerian Maduka Okeke explained that their visit was in solidarity with the Nimbo people and the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka. Using Igbo proverbs he expressed the heartfelt desire of the Bishops to console the Nimbo people. "We heard what happened. It was scourging. It was sorrowful.

It was so painful because if there was war, people would have known and prepared themselves. But to be sleeping or resting and all of a sudden one is besieged and invaded, it is very painful. However, the most painful side of the story is that we are told that those who committed this crime had no provocation from none of their victims. It is very bad.

"We appeal to governments and security agents to take up their responsibilities very seriously. If they are called upon, they should respond appropriately to prevent future occurrences. I want to tell you that we have been praying for you ever since we heard your sad stories. Be consoled. May God wipe your tears", the Archbishop consoled them.

In modesty, the Metropolitan of Onitsha announced their handsome donations of hundred bags of rice and money to the people. It was the host Bishop Godfrey Igwebuike Onah who explained further to the Nimbo people the magnanimous donation of the Onitsha Provincial Catholic Bishops. He explained that the Bishops were donating hundred bags of rice worth one million, five hundred naira (N1.5m) with an accompanying eight million, five hundred naira (N8.5m).

The people were thrilled with joy. When our reporters spoke to some of the people, they said that the gesture of the Bishops has shown they cared for the wellbeing of their flock. Others hipped praises on the Bishops. One man said he would live and die a Catholic. The Dean of Adani Deanery, Very Rev. Fr. Frederick Omegoha, was there too to receive the Bishops.

Grabbing the microphone, he broke into songs. The parish priest, Rev. Fr. Joseph Okeke Obetta narrated to the bishops how the ordeal took place. He too broke into songs as he spoke to the admiration of some bishops, while some others fought back tears. It would be recalled that the suspected Fulani Herdsmen attempted severally to raze down his rectory, but at the end, they could not. They only left after firing series of gun shots into the building to kill whoever was hiding inside.

“I am okay. You can see me inspecting the guard of honour. You can see I am taller than you. Do you want to wrestle with me? You can do so,” Buhari said

Military Arrests 19 Niger-Delta Avengers, Foils Attack On Agip Pipeline

The Joint Military Force deployed to protect oil installations in the Niger Delta, Operation Pulo Shield, on Friday said it foiled an attack on Agip’s oilfield and arrested 19 suspected vandals in several operations in May and June 2016.

Col. Isa Ado, Spokesman of the force, said in a statement said that troops have intensified patrols to forestall further destruction of oil facilities following renewed attacks in the region.

According to Isa, troops while on patrol on June 9 along Brass water ways of Bayelsa foiled an attempt by suspected pipeline vandals to destroy Agip’s oil pipeline at Okpoma Community.

He explained that the suspected vandals had dug and planted dynamites beneath the pipeline location in a swamp for detonation before the troops foiled the sabotage operation.

The joint force recovered two dynamite detonators, cable wire and battery.
Ado said that on May 28, troops of the force deployed in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa along Ebelebiri and Agba communities arrested six suspected pipeline vandals and oil thieves.

Eight Cotonou boats loaded with illegally acquired crude oil were destroyed while the suspects were handed over to the prosecuting agency.

“On same day, troops in continuation of its raid on suspected pipeline vandals’ camps carried out cordon and search operation in Oporoma Community of Delta.

“Ten suspected pipeline vandals were arrested during the operation, one pistol, 195 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 14 handheld radio set, 30 detonating cords and several phones with SIM cards were recovered.

“Other items recovered include diving equipment, one personal computer, Ipad, mobile phones and other items,” the statement read in part.

Ado further stated that in a similar development, the Maritime Component of the Joint Force, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta on May 26 and June 14, respectively, arrested three suspected coordinators of several pipeline bombings across the region.

The spokesman added that one of the arrested suspects reportedly confessed to being part of the group that bombed the Nigerian Petroleum Developing Company (NPDC) crude oil pipeline at Escravos, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta.

The new militant group, Niger Delta Avengers, had claimed responsibility for the NPDC attack at Escravos crude export pipeline.

Ado said that several bomb related items were recovered from the vandals who bombed the Escravos facility.

He assured that the joint military force will not be deterred by the activities of criminals and remains highly committed in carrying out its mandate professionally within the Niger Delta region.

According to him, efforts are underway to round up fleeing criminals including pipeline vandals and to dismantle all militant camps in the region.

“Those behind this heinous act of bombing of critical installations in the region are warned to have a rethink and tow the line of peace by adopting a legitimate means to address their grievances instead of taking the law into their hands.

“We must embrace and support the laudable and bold initiative by the government to dialogue for peace and development, and call on the communities to guide their youths against acts capable of sabotaging the economy of the nation,” Ado stated.

He urged people of the region to support the force by providing credible and timely information to aid their operations.

THE RETURN OF THE FULANI HERDSMEN TO NIMBO IN ENUGU

Nimbo community has, again, become a ghost town following the return of Fulani herdsmen who allegedly raped no fewer than six women.
Traditional ruler of the community, Igwe John Ikemefuna Akoh revealed this to Nsukka General Assembly when the group paid a visit to his palace before making a donation of over N1.4 million to the victims of the April 25 massacre in the community.
In his words: “We are glad you people are here today to also share our present fear. For the past two days, our people have not been going to farm as Fulani herdsmen have taken over the entire farm in Nimbo community destroying farmlands and threatening to unleash more terror. Some of our people who saw them said they told them that they were back to unleash more terror with more sophisticated weapons. The herdsmen chased them away and ushered their cattle into the farm. Since then, many people have left the village because they are afraid that more disastrous attack would happen at any time.
“We have called the Divisional Police Officer in charge of this area and he said they did not have fuel in their vehicle,” the Igwe said.
However, when Chief Nnia Nwodo, who is a member of the group called the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State, Emmanuel Ojukwu, to intimate him on the report, he confirmed the report and said Nsukka Area Command has been instructed to arrest the situation and promised he was on the way to Nimbo.
However, Chairman of Nsukka General Assembly, Prof. Lawrence Ochor called on the state government to declare a state of emergency in Enugu State to avoid another attack even as he urged the community to protect themselves with any available means within their reach. “I urge the youths of Nimbo to mobilise themselves and protect their village from the menace of Fulani herdsmen. We cannot run away from our village, it is time full state of emergency is declared so as to avert another possible attack. We are confident that the administration of Governor Ugwuanyi is on top of this matter but, more effort is needed from everybody to rescue our state from the hands of Fulani herdsmen.”
While donating over N1.4 million on behalf of the group to the victims, Ochor urged the victims to forget the attack and move on with their lives, believing God to provide for them. The community, has however called on the state government to declare state of emergency in the area so as to help avert the impending danger. Speaking through their spokesman, Apostle Dr. Akachukwu Clement, the community said their lives have been threatened following the return of Fulani herdsmen and therefore, called Ugwuanyi to take more drastic actions to save the community.
“No amount of security personnel can stop these people.”
However, Nwodo has affirmed that Nsukka people and Enugu State in general cannot condone any other attack from Fulani herdsmen and that further attack on any Enugu Community will be disastrous to Nigeria as a whole.
Similarly, the parish priest of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Nimbo, Rev. Fr. Obetta Okeke pleaded with the state government to come to their rescue.
He also revealed that the herdsmen have continued To Molest their women and were threatening to unleash more mayhem in the community. “We are calling on the state and Federal Government to come to our rescue as these herdsmen continue to attack our villagers. The war is not over. Many women have been raped and our people have not been going to farm for the past two days and that farm is the only source of income to the community. Hectares of farm lands have been destroyed since their return and as raining season will soon stop, famine will soon hit this community and Enugu at large as Uzouwani is considered the food basket of this state,” Fr. Okeke said.
Meanwhile, the military personnel posted to the community following the attack of April 25 have abandoned the community without any known cause. According to the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe John Akoh, the military people who have been in the area since the attack recently disappeared without any known reason and it has created more fear in the community. “Our people are in fear not only because the herdsmen have returned but also because the military people who have been here just disappeared without informing anybody or saying anything to us. And in just few days after their withdrawal, the herdsmen returned. And if you recall, the same thing happened when the herdsmen attacked us in April. The security agencies were patrolling around during that time but just few minutes to the attack, they disappeared and our people were butchered on that day. So, the same thing is happening now and it made our people to be living in fear while others have left the community. Today is our market day, but you can see that nobody is there because they have all left the community,” the Igwe said.
